itsme covers every identity step in the BNPL journey

Since the revised Consumer Credit Directive (CCD2), every BNPL agreement needs a verified customer, a confirmed age and a documented process behind both. Itsme handles the identity side of that journey.

What CCD2 asks for, and where itsme fits

CCD2 applies from 20 November 2026. Belgium's transposition law was adopted on 9 July 2026 and applies to credit requested on or after that date. Learn what the regulation requires exactly, what itsme covers, and what that means for your flow.

Verify identity without a document scan

Your customer proves who they are with the identity they already use for their bank, their insurer and the government. No upload, no waiting, no drop-off while a document is reviewed.

Frequently asked questions

Does CCD2 apply to my BNPL product?

CCD2 brings most deferred payment and short-term instalment products into the scope of consumer credit regulation, including many that fell outside the 2008 directive because of their size or duration. National implementations vary, so the definitive answer depends on your product terms and the markets you operate in.

What does CCD2 require in terms of identity verification?

Providers must identify the consumer before entering into a credit agreement and keep evidence supporting that process. Because BNPL now sits inside regulated consumer credit, the AML framework applies alongside it.

Can itsme confirm a customer's age without sharing their full identity?

Yes. itsme shares only the attributes you request. For an eligibility check that means name, surname and date of birth, rather than a complete identity profile or a copy of an identity document.

Does itsme assess creditworthiness or affordability?

No. itsme covers identification, age verification and authentication. Assessment of income, expenses and existing liabilities is handled by your credit bureau or open banking provider, and itsme is designed to sit alongside those services.

Which of my customers can use itsme?

itsme is used by millions of consumers and is accepted by banks, insurers and government services. For customers outside Belgium and the Netherlands, see our coverage page and our EU Digital Identity Wallet intermediary service.

Will adding an identity check hurt my checkout conversion?

It depends entirely on what the check asks of the customer. Document scans and manual review add friction and drop-off. itsme reuses an identity the customer already has, so verification takes a single tap, and returning customers are recognised without repeating it.
