Amsterdam, 1 June 2026 – itsme is launching its well-known identification-app in the Netherlands today. The app makes it easy and secure for users to verify their identity online and will eventually replace the existing iDIN system. Large-scale research shows that the Dutch are ready for such an app: 68% say they feel unsafe online and almost everyone (87%) wants fewer different login methods.

A household name in Belgium

itsme provides people with one secure digital identification method, eliminating the need to repeatedly share copies of their ID documents or use separate logins for every service. The process is designed to be as simple as possible: identification takes just three taps.

itsme acquired the iDIN service at the end of 2025, allowing the company to help millions of users in the Netherlands identify themselves with hundreds of organisations, including a.s.r., PostNL, BKR, and PSV. More organisations in the Netherlands are expected to join itsme in the near future. The app is already a household name in Belgium: over 80% of adults use itsme to identify themselves online with both businesses and government organisations. Over one million identification checks are carried out daily, making its status comparable to DigiD in the Netherlands.

Concerns about online identity

The official launch of itsme comes at a time when people in the Netherlands are increasingly concerned about their online identity. Large-scale research shows that 61% are worried by news of hacks, data breaches and data misuse, and 68% feel unsafe online. Four in ten (40%) say they have been victims of a data breach, and a quarter (25%) say they have experienced someone gaining unauthorised access to one of their accounts.

Secure and widely applicable

itsme aims to restore trust in online identity. It does this by operating within very strict security frameworks and offering broad applicability. The app has the highest level of assurance under European regulations for digital identification, which means it can also be used to access the EU Digital Wallet, which will be gradually introduced across Europe. In addition, itsme gives users more control over how and with whom they share their data. In the app, they can see which organisation is requesting which data and decide for themselves whether to agree to this. This aligns with a clear desire among the Dutch public: 58% want more control over which organisations hold and use their personal data.

Fewer dropouts

itsme also offers benefits for organisations that need to identify their users. The service involves significantly fewer risks than running an in-house identification process and provides greater certainty about who is on the other end. Furthermore, in Belgium, people seem far less likely to drop out when logging in via itsme, thanks to its recognisability and clarity.. Dutch users, too, are looking for a single, recognisable identification method: as many as 87% want fewer separate accounts and login methods, according to the research.

The next step after iDIN

iDIN was established in 2016 by Dutch banks to provide internet users with a secure way to identify themselves to other companies.

How do you use itsme?

itsme is available in the App Store and on Google Play, and is free to download and use. Users register once by scanning their passport or ID card and taking a selfie. After that, itsme is ready to use with all affiliated companies and services. Users open the app, check which company is requesting which data, and approve the action using a personal code, fingerprint or facial recognition. This process takes just a few seconds.
